Bunny Health

If you have a bunny who is acting strange or has something on their skin or anything that looks odd about them, please contact me before going to the vet. You could save yourself hundreds of dollars if instead of going into the vet for some chemical treatment you simply spend a couple dollars (if that) with a simple and natural (+ healthier) treatment at home.

There are several common health problems that bunnies have. On this page I will begin to list a few of them along with their treatment.

Sore Hocks
Mini Rex (and the original Rex breed in general) have a tendency to get sore hocks because the fur on their feet is not as fluffy and thick as most other breeds. Unlike cats and dogs who have pads on their feet, bunnies rely on their fur to protect their feet. Sore hocks on a bunny's feet look callused, red, raw, or even bloody. The fur will probably be rubbed off. Thankfully there is a very simple treatment to this! Mini Rex get sore hocks if: thier nails are not trimmed, if they do not have a soft surface in their cage, if they stamp and run around or simply stand on wire or hard flat surfaces all the time.
The Treatment:
To treat sore hocks, simply keep your bunny's cage full of a clean, thick layer of bedding (grass, hay, shavings, shredded paper, etc..) and trim their nails once a week. If their feet look sore, then you can rinse them with water or a mixture of vinegar and water to clean them; however, make sure you dry them immediately afterwards! If these things do not work, or your bunny's feet are really bad or infected, that is when you should go to the vet.

Ear Mites
Bunnies will sometimes get ear mites. The ear mites can come from a variety of different sources. Rabbits can get ear mites from dirty equipment, other animals, their food, or litter. One of the most common thing that rabbits get mites from is hay. Dusty hay in particular will often carry mites. If your bunny has something that looks like a scab or a collection of scabs in its ear, it is probably ear mites. Ear mites can be painful to your bunny and often in an attempt to rid themselves of the mites they will scratch off the scabby stuff and scar their ears. Thankfully, there is a very easy way to both prevent and get rid of mites.
The Treatment:
The easiest thing to use to prevent or exterminate ear mites is olive oil or baby oil. Simply use a clean cotton ball to apply a coat of baby oil or natural olive oil to the inside of the bunny's ears. If the ear mites are bad, let a few drops of oil run down into their ear and gently massage the ear's base. It can also be helpful to apply oil to edges and outside of the ear as well. If the bunny has bad ear mites, be sure to treat it immediately. Without treatment, your bunny could go deaf. For a bad case of mites, apply oil every other day for 2 weeks. For a few mites, apply oil twice a week for 3 weeks. For ear mite prevention, apply a small amount of oil once a week.
